Fanö Petsamofjord in Finland

Hello,
Congratiolations with your new webside. I am glade that the computer has acceptet me.

I have a question about the MAA 517 in Finland. Maybee someone can help me. I am searching for the place Fanö, I think in Finland, now Russia.
Because of the german M.A.A.517: Standort Petsamofjord/Fanö.
Is Fanö a city, a fjord or a region? Maybee someone has an old map from the region and can scan it for me.

I am quite sure that it is the island Fanø in Denmark. As I believe, some guns from here were brought to Petsamofjord. Rune Rautio might know more. When I wrote the article, I have very little information abuot that battery.

I have found Fanö in Denmark but it seems unlikely to me that a Marineartillerieabteilung in Finland was called after a place in Denmark. Björn, doe you have more information about it and the gun’s.

It is Tessin I have used as source. I will have to check this more closer, I am not aware of any "Fanø", or "Fanøy" in that area.

It sounds very strange. The M.A.A. on Fanø was numberede 518.

I see no obvious connect - the most likely thing would be the misspelling of a Norwegian name .

Yes, I would believe so. Probably "Fanøy", or "Fanøya", but I had no luck finding it so far...eagerly awaiting Rune Rautio or Øistein Berge now.

I am a simple worker and somtimes i am thinking.
Maybe Fanö or Fanöe is a misspelling. It sounds noewegian but I think it is in Finland.
It is a german name, that is sure.

The name is witten down in different papers:
1. WASt Berlin in 2008 (maybee german name of the place)
2. Tessin (I don’t know his source)
3. Festung Norwegen (http://www.nuav.net/navcom.html ) maybe copied from Tessin

I don’t know wat is real.

Yes, until 1944 the west side if the Petsamofjord (today Petsjenga) would have been finnish. Liinahammari was a Finnish harbour, and it is located on the west side.

The Germans sometimes used strange spellings.

You say:

Both WASt and I use Tessin, so he is the main source.

yes, I know about the Petsamofjord (today Petsjenga), Kap Romanow and Liinahammari. I have a lot of questions about it but it is now not important.

Your conclusion, I think is ok: (both WASt and I use Tessin, so he is the main source)

But it is a pitty, I am not able to research the throuth.

I have get some smal information about Fanö from other people. But I think nobody knows wat’s the real reason is of the german name Fanö or Fanöe.

The information I have got was from Nilsson:
My question:
Die MAA 517 lag in Finnland, aber Fanöe sagt mir nichts. Mai 1942 MKB 4/ 517 Mestersand former: (7/ 513 )?

Answer:
“Der 513 scheint mir ursprünglich einen sehr großen Küstenbereich unterstanden zu haben. ………
In Anbetracht der ursprünglichen Ausdehnung der 513 könnte dies durchaus passen. Mestersand wäre dann möglicherweise der westlichste Punkt für die MAA 517.

Für Fanöe sehe ich derzeit zwei Möglichkeiten, welche allerdings reine Spekulation sind:

1. Petsamo ist die östliche Begrenzung des Bereichs der MAA 517 und Fanöe, was immer das sein mag, könnte die westliche sein. Diese müsste dann, …….. irgendwo in der Nähe oder noch weiter westlich liegen.
Oder aber
2. Aus Teilen der MAA 517 ist die MAA 518, welche es da aber leider noch nicht gab, aufgefüllt worden.”
