Stirling Bomber crash on 25th February 1945
On 25th February 1945 a Stirling Bomber serial number LJ925 was dropping supplies to the Resistance in the Telemark area as part of Operation "Stirrup 2". While it was over Grimstad it was attacked by German night fighters and set on fire. The crew were ordered to bail out and three successfully jumped. Of the three, two were captured, but the third was hidden by the Resistance and got away.
The remainder of the crew perished when the Stirling crashed into Holen Fjord near Arendal.
They are all buried in Arendal Cemetery.
A friend of mine in the USA is a relative of the only member of the RAF who was in the crew. The remainder were Australian. His name was Flight Sgt. Humphrey.
Is there anybody who lives close to Arendal who can take a photograph of the grave or memorial and send it to me?
Thank you

The grave is located at Arendal graveyard together with other graves for allied aircrew that was killed in Aust Agder, and there should be no problems providing photos, but there is probably lot of snow there right now.

My grandfather F.O. Tickner was the pilot of the Stirling Bomber. My family went out to the crash site area a few years ago. Does anyone have any firsthand accounts of what happened that night? Thanks.

!96 Squadron Stirling
Warren,
One man who I know is very well versed on SOE into Norway is Arne F Egner. He's author of the superb book, 'Kanonen spiller Chopin' - 'The Canon plays Chopin'. I checked out Guleside and there appears to be only one Arne F Egner. Here's his address:
Nordraaks vei 7, 1369 Stabekk
- Fasttelefon – Privat
67 12 18 58
Arne Frank Egner
- Mobiltelefon – Privat
959 11 435
Stirrup 2 op is mentioned on pages 335 & 365 of Arne's book. Strangely, there's no mention of the loss is Freddie Clark's reference work - 'Agents By Moonlight', although the general name of Stirrup as an op is logged. Please note there were many Stirrup operations and they ranged from 1-18, but I guess you already know that.
Hope the above helps a little
Cheers
Bob
