A journalist-friend of mine just sendt me a mail. A reader was wondering about a RAF attac on Haugesund during the night 13. - 14. February 1941. His aunt that lived in Sørhauggaten, in the middle of Haugesund was killed during this attac. Now he's wondering what the target for these bombers were, and any information about this attac.
Anyone?

Hi Cutstone,

I suggest the first port of call be the RAF musuem at Hendon. These guys are very well informed and helpful.

Bob - I've just sent the museum a request, and are waiting for answere. Never been there. Maybe in November when I head for Kew again Wink
Tom - You are quite right. I must check the books I have about bomber command raids. Have a few. Had forgotten about them Smile
If i find any asweres I'll let you know.

Arquebus was the first tip I gave the journalist friend of mine. Have not heard from him, if they could help him.
It dosn't seem like they have a great knowledge or archives of stuff like this.
Knew about the episode with the Kantonella, but not the link, even though I've been through the Shetlandpages many times.

Running with the tip from Bob, I sent a request to the RAF museum in Hendon. Today I received an answere from the the assitant curator, that writes:

"Thank you for your enquiry of 12th July, according to the Air Staff Operational Summary for 15th February 1941; on the night of the 13th 14th February 1941 six Beaufort aircraft dropped sea-mines at Haugesund while two other Beauforts made a diversion over the town. The report does not say if the two diversionary aircraft dropped bombs or not."

Of course it didn't have to have been bombs. It could also have been strafing.
Well, it was good to get an answere to bring to the relatives.

I totally agree!
He suggested that I should consult the Operations Record Books for the Squadrons that operated Beauforts at these dates; 217, 22, 42 and 86 Squadron. "These books are effectively unit dairies and give account of a unit's activities on a day to day basis, these books are held at the National Archives in Kew, London." This will be checked when I visit Kew in Novermber. Anyone that has used these ORB's?
Easy to navigate?
By the way, how far from Kew is The museum with the tube? It's quite a way north, I can see on Google.

These must be the files I will be checking:
217 Squadron - AIR 27/1341, but maybe first AIR 27/1345 or AIR 27/1346
22 Squadron - AIR 27/280
42 Squadron - AIR 27/439 - AIR 27/442
86 Squadron - AIR 27/708

Hi Cutstone,

I proffer two days in November! One day at Kew the next at Hendon. You can do both in one day, but it really would be split loyalties. Then tube is the best bet, but not at peak periods. It takes me around an hour to travel across London from Newbury park to Kew, but at times it has been an hour and a half each way.
