The Finnish steamer "Esthér Thordén" carried timber bound for the US, as well as roughly 1,7 tons of gold, presumably from the Finnish gold reserves. It has been speculated that the gold was on its way to the US to finance Finnish purchase of weapons and equipment, but the Germans saw it as contraband and sent the ship to Norway with a prize crew.

What happened later I am not sure.
