Norwegian MTBs Empty Norwegian MTBs

Post  Bob Pearson Tue 18 Oct 2011 - 22:19

During the war the 30th Flotilla, later renamed the 54th Flotilla operated out of Lerwick on ops against occupied Norway. Does anyone know where the records of these flotillas are kept. I have checked out the archives at Kew, but whilst there are a handful of files I am surprised there are not more.

If anyone knows where these records are kept then I would appreciate a shout.

The main period of interest is 1942 - 1944.

Many thanks in advance,

Bob

Hei Bob.
It is my suggest that you make an inquiry to Marinemuseet (Nor. Naval Museum) at Horten.
They have been very kind and helpful to me on several occations

Hi Hans Olav,

Thanks for the mail. I will send Horten an e-mail later today. Portsmouth Naval Musuem have been contacted and I now await their response. Hopefully, between the two there will be some top info.

Thanks again and best wishes,

Bob

Bob, have you checked the reference pages in the various books about the subject:
- "Angrep i skjærgården" av Jon Rustung Hegland
- "Klar til storm" av Arnfinn Haga
- "The waves are free - Shetland / Norway links 1940 - 1945" av James W. Irvine
- "Norske torpedobåter gjennom 125 år"
- "De drepte våre menn" av Sven Erik Grieg Smith (About MTB 345)
- "Norges sjøkrig 1940—1945" av Steen, E. A.

There is also a good overview here of a few of the operations, with dates:

Click on the + in front of nr. 8.
There are some stuff about the MTB operations there. Don't know what, but I would love to check it out!!

Good call on websites - excellent material. The books: I have James Irvine's account, but the others I need to seek out.

Mails have been fired off to Horten and Portsmouth Naval Museum - now awaiting their replies.

Thanks again, Cutstone
