Anyone who has the rank, names and units of the 15 norwegian army officers who participated in the Normandie campain.
Does anyone knows about other norwegians who served with other non norwegian allied ARMY units on the western front.

Thanks

K

Lt. (later Major General) Sverre Bratland fought with the 159th brigade/11th Armoured Division around Caen. he did not participate in the actual D-Day invasion though,as the 11th arrived in France 8 days or so after the invasion.

In 1943, 12 Norwegian officers were commissioned into the 4 KSLI but I am not sure how many participated in Normandie.

Hope it helps a little at least :-)

Further to my previous posting, I looked quickly up some records from the the Norwegian Military College in London, and found the following listings of officers that served in France 1944-45. A total of 16 Norwegian officers served with British units in France and 1 in Italy, the last one was also killed in action.

All had the rank of Lt, though some were later promoted to Captain:

Sverre Bratland:
Served with 4th Battallion, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, 159th Infantry Brigade. Wounded at Caen, returned to active duty one month later. Promoted to captain and company second in command, from January 1945 company commander. Seriosuly wounded in April 1945. Awarded St. Olav's Medal with Oak Leaf and Military Cross.

Norvald Bernhard Frafjord:
Served with 6th Battallion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. Killed in action on the 16th of July 1944.

Johan Ragnvald Godø:
Tasked with establishing a Norwegian coastal artillery position on Sørøya, Finnmark, Norway in February 1945. Godø and his force of local volunteers got involved in guerilla warfare with German forces still raiding the area.

Jan Güettler:
Served with 6th Battallion, Green Howards. Killed in action on the 16th of July 1944. Awarded St. Olav's Medal with Oak Leaf.

Brynjar Hammer:
Served with 6th Battallion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. Wounded twice. Killed north of Niemegen on the 26th of September 1944, when a German officer who had surrendered suddenly opened fire.

Sverre Ludvig Borgund Hamre:
Served with 4th Battallion, The Welsh Regiment, 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division. Promoted to captain in the autumn of 1944, served as second in command and periodically as acting company commander. Seriosuly wounded at Hertogenbosch in November 1944. Awarded St. Olav's Medal with Oak Leaf and Military Cross.

Klaus Hegstad:
Served with 4th Battallion, The Welsh Regiment. Seriously wounded at Caen.

Hans Jacob Kjerland:
Served with 52nd Lowland Division untill January 1945, when he was transfered to Norwegian Independent Company No 1 ("Company Linge").

Nils Mykletun:
Served with 52nd Lowland Division

Gustav Aagard:
Served with 260 Field Company, Royal Engineers. Severely wounded at Caen.

Thank you Kai,
Lt. Ivar Stamnes served as platoon commander in Welsh Guards, and has written about his war service in the book "I panservogn fra Caen til Bryssel".

Norwegian army personel in Normandie and following Campain Empty Norwegian with the 52nd (Lowland) Division

Check out this page for more info about the 50 liason officers with the 52nd (Lowland) Division.
http://home.online.no/~gestrom/history/nbrigfrm.htm
Go down three quarters of the page until you get to "The liaison officers"

One of these guys were lieutenant Ådne Underhaug, who were awarded the military cross. He left Norway onboard the fishingwessel Sjøleik, from Tananger, outsiden Stavanger. As a Platoon Commander he lead his troop during an attac on a german position, in the village of Oudeland, on South Beveland. He was shot through the lenght of his back, but continued. Then he was hit one more time, but directed the strecher bearers to his wounded men. After taking the position he collapsed and was carried away. He recovered and married a nurse from the hospital where he lay.

Hello!
I can just add that Ådne Underhaug, b. 1916, d. 1984 is buried in Øvstun, Bergen. His gravestone is marked with the English sentence "God is love".

Thanks a lot for the good answers,
I am particularly interested in the name of a Norwegian Captain serving in a British unit on the western front Dec 44/Jan 1945, I think most of the Norwegian officers were killed or wounded, or sent back to UK before that time.
The only Captain still in service at that point was to my knowledge Sverre Bratland.

Jan Guettler was Swedish, from Djursholm, near Stockholm. He volunteered in the Finnish War, fought in Norway and then flew to England to join the forces there.
